One Lie Too Many: Call on Congress to Censure Bush

Here is the message we sent to our members after the Associated Press released video of President Bush's personal briefing about the potential damage of Hurricane Katrina the day before the storm hit. It asks members to call on Congress to censure Bush for failing to protect the people of the Gulf Coast – and failing to be honest about it afterwards.

Subject: One Lie Too Many: Call on Congress to Censure Bush

Dear ColorOfChange.org member,

President Bush tried to explain his administration's disastrous mishandling of Hurricane Katrina by saying they didn't know what was coming. He even said, "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees."[1] He was lying. Yesterday, the Associated Press released a video of a detailed, personal briefing where the President learned about the devastation that Katrina could bring, including the possible failure of the levees to protect New Orleans.

The President's job is to keep us safe. He failed completely. Then he lied to the American people to cover it up. That is simply unacceptable. Join us and call on Congress to censure the President:

Bush asked no questions during this videotaped briefing. He just dismissed the concerns, saying "We are fully prepared." Then, instead of moving to protect the people of the Gulf Coast, he spent the next several days vacationing.

Meanwhile, more than 1,300 people died. Hundreds of thousands from the Gulf coast were displaced. They're still trying to piece their lives together, with little help from the Bush administration.

This is a staggering dereliction of duty. At the very least, it demands censure from Congress.

This goes beyond party affiliation. Republicans want to be the party of morality and family values? Then they need to prove it by leading the charge against sloth and lying at the highest levels of government. Democrats want to be the party for people who get left behind? Then they need to prove it by standing up for those people now – and by standing up to Bush.

Congress needs to send George Bush a strong message: You cannot behave this way and expect to remain President. Congress needs to censure the President.

Join us in calling on Congress to act now:
