Stop Ohio from Suppressing the Black Vote

Ohio's Secretary of State, Kenneth Blackwell, along with other Republicans in the state legislature, are pushing a scheme that will make it much harder for groups that register Black and low-income voters to do their work. If they get their way, Ohio will suppress the vote of tens of thousands of Black and low-income voters and set a dangerous precedent for the rest of the country.

On June 26th, the Ohio Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review will review Blackwell's plan. Please join us, along with People for the American Way, in calling on JCARR to stop this anti-democratic scheme in its tracks.

Dear JCARR member,

Black people and other Americans have fought long and hard for the right to vote in this country. Exercising that right is facilitated by the efforts of numerous organizations that help members of our community register and vote.

Secretary Blackwell's interpretation of HB 3, and the rules recently adopted to comply with it, create burdensome and unnecessary restrictions on voting drives that serve no beneficial purpose for voters. To many, they appear to be a veiled attempt to suppress the vote in minority and low-income communities.

Ohio should be taking steps to encourage civic participation. Elected officials should be supporting voter registration and "get out the vote" drives, not hindering them.

I urge you to reject the recently adopted rules regarding voting registration. They have no place in Ohio or any other state in America.

Sincerely,

[your name here]
