Books not Bars: Help Defeat the Runner Initiative

Tell the California Association of Health Underwriters to withdraw its support

California Association of Health Underwriters (CAHU) is one of the largest corporate sponsors of the Runner Initiative—a disastrous plan that moves money from public schools to prison and will push California's already strained budget closer to bankruptcy.

We can help beat the initiative by draining the money used to promote it. Please join us to demand that CAHU withdraw its money and support from the Runner Initiative.

Here is the text of the message we'll send to CAHU's Board of Directors unless you create your own statement.

Dear CAHU Board Member,

As a California citizen, I strongly urge you to vote to withdraw your funding and support of the Runner Initiative, now entitled, "Criminal Penalties and Law Public Safety Funding Statute."

The Runner Initiative would mandate state dollars currently available for health, education, drug treatment and mental health services be spent on prison-building and policing. The plan criminalizes the poor and people of color and will push California's already strained budget closer to bankruptcy.

The initiative will also deepen a cycle of disinvestment and despair in under-resourced communities across California without increasing levels of public safety in our neighborhoods.

The list of opposition to this initiative is growing daily and now includes the California Federation of Teachers, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, California Church IMPACT and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, among many others.

I urge to join this list by withdrawing your funding and support for the Runner Initiative.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
