Welcome to COC’s newest board member — Dr. Safiya U. Noble

We welcome Dr. Safiya U. Noble, an internet studies scholar and professor of gender studies and African American studies at UCLA, to the Color Of Change Board of Directors.

Dr. Noble, co-founder and co-director of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry, joined the COC board in June 2022.

She is the best-selling author of “Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism” and is highly sought out nationally for her expertise on issues of algorithmic discrimination and technology bias.

Color Of Change works to ensure decision-makers in government and corporations  center racial justice in issues involving technology and Big Tech’s powerful impact on the lives of Black people and Black-owned businesses — from access to the internet and pervasive surveillance to who gets access to educational, employment, health care and financial opportunities.

Dr. Noble was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship “genius grant” in 2021 for her ground-breaking work on algorithmic discrimination, which led to her founding of Equity Engine, a nonprofit investing in Black women and women of color who are driving change through start-ups, organizations, education, media and social justice movements.

Earlier this year, she was honored as the inaugural recipient of the NAACP-Archewell Digital Civil Rights Award that recognizes leaders creating change – at the intersection of social justice and technology – to advance civil and human rights.

Dr. Noble and COC President Rashad Robinson were both featured on the program at Media Democracy Fund’s conference in August 2022 on Narrative Strategy in the Age of Conspiracy and Misinformation.
