Why Facebook Can’t Fix Itself

Facebook’s platform is overrun with hate speech and disinformation. This article asks, does it really want to solve the problem? Rashad Robinson, president of Color Of Change and one of the leaders behind the #StopHateForProfit boycott targeting Facebook is quoted. “I don’t want to sound naïve, but until recently I was willing to believe that they were committed to making real progress. But then the hate speech and the toxicity keeps multiplying, and at a certain point you go, Oh, maybe, despite what they say, getting rid of this stuff just isn’t a priority for them.”

With Days Left, Black Voters Face Orchestrated Efforts to Discourage Voting

This year we’re up against a new tactic to suppress the Black vote: social media memes aimed at convincing young people their vote can’t stop racism or anti-Black violence. Voter depression narratives can be difficult to dislodge but Color Of Change is fighting back. Vice President Arisha Hatch says, “While voters prone to not turn out might not see the importance of electing a president and the impact on their lives, we are having a conversation with them about the daily decisions that prosecutors make that are causing harm in Black communities. And when we engage in that conversation their mentality begins to shift.” She is also having closed-door meetings with Facebook, Google and Twitter, to discuss what they need to do to ensure that their platforms aren’t being used to disenfranchise Black voters.

Social Media Pounds Non-White Female Candidates, Researchers Find

A British think tank reports hate groups in the US have been using Facebook and Twitter to spread false and abusive information about vice presidential hopeful Kamala Harris and other minority candidates. The research is part of a larger story of how Facebook continues to undermine democracy and civil rights. COC Vice President Arisha Hatch says everyday racist and sexist groups use Facebook to spread lies about women of color running for office. According to the study, Representatives Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were targeted the most on Facebook.

“This Does Feel Different”: As Support for Black Lives Matter Drops Off, Will Corporate America Stay the Course?

After police murdered George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement got unprecedented support, and companies were all about racial justice—there was more risk in remaining silent. But what happens as public support wavers? Arisha Hatch, Color Of Change’s vice president says she’s seen a “sea change” in how companies are racial justice issues, that they’ve got a new sense of obligation to move beyond rhetoric to real action. And it’s too late to turn back now.

Proud Boys Website, Online Store Dropped by Web Host

The Proud Boys grew instantly famous when Trump was asked to denounce the white supremacist group and instead gave them a shout out on live TV. After we leapt into action, the group lost the host for their website and online store. “After a heads up from Color of Change, we notified one of our customers—a website hoster—who took action,” a Google Cloud spokesperson said. This is part of our ongoing work stop big tech from funding and enabling hate groups. Rashad Robinson is quoted, “Big Tech companies have the power and resources to take meaningful action, but instead turn to last-minute, knee-jerk reactions that often fail to prevent further violent harm or even death. When you allow hate groups to recruit, organize, and mobilize on your platform, it’s no longer a question whether your company cares about Black people—YOU DON’T.”

Trump Targeting Black Voters in 2016 Shows Facebook’s Microtargeting Is a Danger to Democracy, experts say

New data shows the Trump campaign strategically launched ads on Facebook to deter Black people from voting through a process known as microtargeting. Microtargeting is broadly not regulated in the US. While Facebook claims to have addressed problems in how its platform was used in 2016, experts disagree. Dr. Jennifer Cobbe says, “Facebook talks a lot about bad actors misusing its platform, but the truth is that the biggest bad actor on Facebook is Facebook.” And Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson says Facebook’s actions are “too little too late for the millions of Black voters who were disenfranchised four years ago.”

These 5 Leaders Are Transforming How America Works, Plays, and Invests

Rashad Robinson, and Color Of Change’s work to hold big tech companies accountable, is featured in Business Insider’s list of five leaders transforming America. COC’s membership has swelled from 1.7M people to 7M in 2020. Rashad is quoted, “When I have sat across the table with Mark Zuckerberg, and he has tried to defend the Daily Caller being a fact-checking news site, and Breitbart being a fact-checking site when they have advanced white nationalists, I have to say to him, ‘Then it’s hard to trust that you actually care about civil rights.”

Trump’s Refusal to Condemn White Supremacy Fits Pattern of Extremist Rhetoric

Rashad Robinson is quoted in this article on Trump’s dangerous longstanding pattern of egging on white nationalists. Rashad says Trump “made his call to violence crystal clear…. Just minutes after he told a terrorist organization to ‘stand by’, they started suiting up and preparing to attack America. Trump needs white nationalists at the ready because he needs violence to win the election. He wants white nationalists to invade polling places across the country and prevent voters from voting, to invade our streets and attack people who are protesting, and to prevent ballots from being counted. He made clear that his campaign is not about winning votes, it’s about holding on to power – no matter the cost.”

Facebook Implements New Rules to Prevent Voter Intimidation

Less than a month before the election, Facebook has announced posts with militarized language like “army” or “battle” will be removed under a new policy to try to prevent voter intimidation. The policy comes in response to a controversial Trump ad in which he calls for an “army” of supporters to show up at polling stations. A watchdog group of activists and academics – which Color Of Change is a member of – says Facebook has not nearly gone far enough in allowing “the flow of poison into the population.” COC’s President Rashad Robinson is quoted, saying calls like Trump’s are “a threat to our ability to express our will for a better future.”

Hedge Funds Fall Flat When It Comes to Diversifying Their Ranks

Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson was interviewed for this article on how white- and male-dominated the hedge fund industry is. In 2020, not 1 of the nation’s 30 largest hedge funds is run by a woman or a person of color. Less than 20% are employees are women, and most women- or Black-owned firms have less than US$500 million in assets. Robinsons says that for the industry to make real progress firms should consider building financial incentives into hiring and retaining a diverse workforce. “When money comes into play, people get creative.”

Facebook Finally Slowed Down—When We Needed It to Move Fast

Three years after the idea was first proposed, Facebook finally created an oversight board–but the move comes too late to stop the spread of propaganda or misinformation in the 2020 elections. The activists and organizations like Color Of Change that make up what’s privately referred to as “Facebook’s Real Oversight Board” say this is too little, too late, no more than “a corporate whitewashing exercise” without the power to influence policy. And while Facebook moves fast when business deals are on the line, the oversight board will probably not hear its first case ’til the end of 2020 at best.
