Color Of Change: Kentucky A.G.’s Failure to Bring Murder Charges is a Second Injustice Against Breonna Taylor

For Immediate Release: September 23, 2020

Rashad Robinson, President of Color Of Change, issued this statement following Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s failure to bring murder charges in the death of Breonna Taylor:

“Today marks a heavy day for the family and loved ones of Breonna Taylor, the Louisville community, and protesters around the world who have demanded accountability for her death. Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron and a local grand jury have failed to bring murder charges in the brutal killing of Breonna Taylor. In fact, they have declined to charge officers for her death at all; just one of Bre’s killers faces a minor charge completely unrelated to her murder. Officials have flatly denied justice to Bre and her loved ones, as well as the brave allies and activists calling for justice in her honor.

“Our current justice and policing system has failed. The city of Louisville spends an estimated $190 million — more than 50 percent of its entire budget — on a police force that consistently fails to do its job. It has failed to keep residents safe — even in their own homes. It has failed to protect Black people or stem the tide of racist police violence. And today, it has failed to hold itself accountable for the murder of Breonna Taylor. Aggressive, racist policing is literally killing us and our only path forward is deep, systemic, and comprehensive reform.

“In the six months since Louisville officers gunned Bre down in her own home, her community has been waiting to see justice done. Her story gave rise to a national movement against police brutality and racial violence, and that does not end with this grand jury decision. Millions of people worldwide have joined the movement to #SayHerName and demand justice for Bre. Black kids across the country have recognized their power to bring change. Our white allies are having difficult but much-needed conversations at their dinner tables. And so many local organizers now have the resources they need to keep the fight going.

“Breonna Taylor changed the world. This is not the end. We won’t be deterred. Passionate folks like Tamika Palmer, Breonna’s mom, are still on the ground fighting relentlessly to secure justice for our people. We stand with Breonna’s family, BLM Louisville, and local organizers and activists in demanding the Louisville City Council take immediate action to divest from the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department and invest in communities.”
