Color Of Change Responds to Disturbing Revelations of Clearview AI Abuse of Surveillance Technologies

Nationwide — Following reports that Clearview AI provided access to its controversial facial recognition software to more than 2,200 corporations, law enforcement agencies and individuals around the world, Color Of Change, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization, issued the following statement from Senior Campaign Director Brandi Collins-Dexter:

“We already know Black people and marginalized communities are disproportionately exposed to the dangerous combination of racial bias in artificial intelligence technology and unchecked policing by the actors who use it.  To now learn that major corporations are using Clearview‘s ill-gotten data and employing dangerous facial recognition technology puts us all at risk, and requires immediate action. When it comes to retail, “Shopping While Black” is an all too real experience that doesn’t need to be supercharged by discriminatory tech.

Today, Color Of Change sent letters to Macy’s, Best Buy, Walmart and the National Basketball Association demanding the corporations cancel all contracts with Clearview and enact policies to prohibit the use of Clearview‘s technology.

Without strong, urgent regulation of surveillance technologies, regulators and public officials will remain complicit in the rise of racial discrimination resulting from these dangerous tools.”
