COLOR OF CHANGE: NEW CHARGES IN THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD ARE A STEP TOWARD JUSTICE
Rashad Robinson, President of Color Of Change, issued the following statement in response to new charges announced in the death of George Floyd:
“After eight days of sustained protests in Minneapolis, across the U.S., and around the world, today George Floyd’s family is one step closer to justice for the murder of their loved one. Because of the leadership of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison — and the passion of peaceful protestors across the globe — former officer Derek Chauvin now faces an even higher level of scrutiny for the life he unnecessarily cut short. Additionally, the three officers who enabled Chauvin’s depraved behavior also face charges. Color Of Change continues to call on Mayor Jacob Frey to defund MPD now.
“In the last two weeks, 6.5 million people have taken action to demand justice with Color Of Change. Today we honor the many thousands of people in all 50 states who have taken to the streets to demand justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless known and unknown cases of police brutality in this country. Over the past eight days, we have seen incredible bravery, grace, and resilience from protestors who have faced targeted and blatant civil rights abuses and the denial of their first amendment rights. It is because of you that George Floyd’s family and community achieved justice today. We thank the many advocates and community members who have worked tirelessly to fight for a world where justice can be achieved without a global public outcry.
Ultimately, justice cannot be fully realized until we see a transformation in the ways in which our communities are treated everyday. We are continuing this fight by joining local activists in the fight to reinvest Minneapolis’s budget to shift resources away from a corrupt police force and towards the resources our communities need to thrive.”
