Color Of Change Calls on President Biden to Fulfill Promise to Nominate First Black Woman to the United States Supreme Court

NATIONWIDE — In the wake of Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer’s retirement announcement, Color Of Change Vice President Arisha Hatch released the following statement:

“Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer’s forthcoming retirement presents a crucial opportunity for the Biden-Harris administration to ensure our nation can effectively move forward on the path to build a more just and equitable nation for Black people. Black voters nationwide delivered the presidency for Biden, and we expect him to deliver on his promise to nominate the first Black woman to the highest court in the land.

We need a Supreme Court justice who will not only prioritize the needs of Black communities, but who also shares our values and deeply understands the issues Black and marginalized people face — including the ongoing, systematic attacks on our civil rights. Whether it’s draconian restrictions on reproductive rights or oppressive attempts to gut voting rights across the nation, the current Supreme Court has proven it desperately needs a justice who will address these ongoing challenges with racial justice and equity at the forefront.

We also call on President Biden to consider nominees who understand the urgent need for  antitrust reform and corporate accountability — especially as tech giants like Google and Facebook continue to jeopardize the safety and economic wellbeing of our communities and our democracy for profit.

We must strive to build a Supreme Court that will help us leverage our collective power to break down antiquated and unjust systems of oppression and discrimination.”
