COLOR OF CHANGE ISSUES THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF THE RE-INTRODUCTION OF THE PEOPLE’S RESPONSE ACT
In response to Representative Cori-Bush’s re-introducing the People’s Response Act, Brandon Tucker, Senior Director of Policy & Government Affairs at Color Of Change released the following statement:
“Policymakers must advance evidence-based policies that prioritize the well-being of our communities. The People’s Response Act is crucial to building safer communities focused on care for all of us. We are proud to support Rep. Cori Bush’s reintroduction of the People’s Response Act. Congress must act now to pass this bill. Our current approach to public safety ignores cries for reform and it’s time that changes.”
“The People’s Response Act would create a new Office of Community Safety within the Department of Health and Human Services to reinforce community safety as a function of public health services. The new division would establish much needed systems that are rooted in improving the well-being of all communities.
“When we invest in proactive non-carceral approaches to public safety our communities become healthier and stronger. If passed, the bill would also launch additional funding for research, a federal first responders unit for health crises, and establish a $2.5 billion First Responder Hiring Grant to help create thousands of jobs. This bill is activism in legislative form, and a testament to the work grassroots activists have made to make their voice heard. Passing this would be a step to correcting the flawed and dangerous legal system that we have currently. The time is now.”
