COLOR OF CHANGE DENOUNCES TRUMP’S  EXECUTIVE ORDER AS EMBOLDENING POLICE MISCONDUCT AND UNDERMINING BLACK SAFETY

NATIONAL –  Last night, President Trump signed an Executive Order entitled “Strengthening and Unleashing America’s Law Enforcement to Pursue Criminals and Protect Innocent Citizens,” which provides further legal protections to police officers and undermines the cause of accountability.

In response, Portia Allen-Kyle, Interim Executive Director of Color Of Change, issued the following statement:

“It was always clear to us that the endgame of Big Law firms’ bending a knee to Trump would result in harm to Black people and communities. For years, Color Of Change has fought for justice for victims of police violence and misconduct. By harnessing private pro-bono defense for officer misconduct, Trump is sending the message to police officers that he will have their back, even when they commit the most egregious acts of violence against Black people, like murdering us in cold blood. The convicted killers of people like George Floyd, Walter Scott, and Breonna Taylor already have the power of police unions and a government apparatus that is primed to protect police over communities. We already know that corrupt, powerful police unions already provide legal and financial assistance to officers who engage in violence against Black people, and this Executive Order only adds to the sense of invincibility that police already have in this country. It is more important than ever for law firms to prove they do more than protect the interests of the powerful, and stop allowing themselves to be weaponized against communities.”
