COC welcomes Black History Month with digital ad campaign
By Color Of Change staff
Color Of Change is taking its Black History Month campaign to the streets.
Throughout the month of February, millions of motorists, commuters and pedestrians in eight cities across the nation will see COC’s digital billboards featuring more than a dozen historical heroes and movement makers of today. The giant, multi-story billboards broadcast the campaign’s message — “Fighting For Black History Until Justice Is Real” — and showcase just a few figures whose work and actions have been critical in the long fight for racial justice.
Featured leaders include notables — from abolitionist Harriet Tubman and writer James Baldwin to April Verrett, secretary-treasurer of the 2 million member-strong Service Employees International Union, and “Gen-Z Historian” Kahlil Greene.
The ads, buttressed by social media, remind people that Black history is not just about the past but about the actions taken every day by people and organizations, including Color Of Change, to advocate for justice and equality.
During the month, COC’s social media is spotlighting the honored leaders so that viewers can learn more about who they are and can follow their work. The billboards also invite viewers to visit COC’s website, join the fight to #DefendBlackHistory and become a COC member.
The ad campaign, in an ongoing partnership with Outfront Media, was recognized Feb. 1 by AdAge as an example of Black creative excellence. An accompanying article featured Outfront’s regional creative director Nicole Mapp sharing her thoughts about the campaign.
Catch a glimpse of the billboards through March 5 in locations throughout New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Orlando and Jacksonville. Transit ads also will be visible throughout the month in New York City subway entrances in all five boroughs.
