Biden Has Achieved His No. 1 Campaign Promise: Beat Trump. Now What?

After winning, now comes the hard part for Joe Biden — delivering on his promises to push far-reaching progressive initiatives to improve healthcare and usher in an era of economic and racial justice. Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson is quoted on what it’ll take for him to succeed. “Biden is going to have to be willing to do something he hasn’t always been willing or able to do — to work with and engage with and mobilize grassroots energy. That is one of the powerful forces at the back of the Trump presidency. “

Trump Blames Low-income People, Minorities for ‘Ruining’ Suburbia

A month out from Election Day, Trump is appealing to the voting groups that shored up his base in 2016 while Biden chips away at them. It’s a familiar playbook. Color Of Change is cited alongside the Movement for Black Lives for calling out the president’s comments, especially on debate night–saying telling the Proud Boys to “stand by” is a rallying cry to white nationalists. The president’s failure to condemn white supremacists and the Proud Boys ends up amplifying such extremist groups online and helps them grow in size and impact.

Athlete Protests Are Now Celebrated. But 1 Olympian Says She’s Paying for Hers.

When Olympian Gwen Berry threw her fist in the air on the awards podium–in protest of the country’s treatment of Black Americans–it nearly cost her her career. She lost most of her corporate sponsors and had to take on an outside job while training for the next Olympics. So Color Of Change stepped up, sponsoring Berry not for endorsements but to encourage her to keep raising her voice. “Our bottom line is justice, not profit,” Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson said. “We need Gwen to raise her voice in powerful ways and to compete and succeed on the field.” Meanwhile, they’re urging corporations to support Black athletes and stand on the right side of history.

November’s Coming. Are Democrats Losing the Battle Over Voter Suppression?

As Election Day nears, Democrats are scrambling to counter disinformation campaigns, complicated absentee ballot requirements and changes in polling locations likely to primarily harm Black and Latino voters. After information surfaced that Trump’s campaign targeted 3.5M Black voters in 2016, Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson commented, “This has been the fear, and this has been what we’re raising our voices about. We are facing a tax that we can’t always see until they’ve hurt us,” referencing poll taxes that once kept Black Americans from voting.

According to Data Leak, Trump Campaign tried to suppress Black Vote in 2016

According to a report by British News Channel 4, the 2016 Trump campaign compiled data on over 200M American voters, placing the word “deterrence” beside the names of 3.5M Black voters–the citizens they did not want to vote on election day. Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson is quoted saying, “This investigation confirms what we’ve always known: Trump and his campaign are actively trying to keep Black Americans from voting. While the Trump campaign looks to lure Black voters with a flimsy policy agenda, we are seeing his true colors. The findings of this investigation should be a wake-up call to Black voters.”

The November Surprise: What If Everyone Showed Up to Vote This Year?

As the country prepares for record turnout from both Democrats and Republicans during pandemic, voter suppression tactics remain strong as ever, especially in states like Texas. Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson says efforts to limit voting by Black people often have the opposite effect. “Recent history shows that attempts to suppress Black people’s votes have been met with higher levels of voting and enthusiasm.” That’s exactly what Color Of Change is working towards.

VIDEO: Rashad Robinson Comments as President Trump Refuses to Denounce White Supremacist Groups

Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson appears on Way Too Early to recap the first presidential debate between Joe Biden and President Trump and Trump’s refusal to denounce white supremacist groups. Rashad said, “We need to recognize it’s not just the Proud Boys, it’s not just the other white nationalists that have been given entree to raise their voices, to stoke violence, to commit violent acts — it’s that they’ve been enabled. And they’ve been enabled by big institutions and corporations.”

Why Facebook Can’t Fix Itself

Facebook’s platform is overrun with hate speech and disinformation. This article asks, does it really want to solve the problem? Rashad Robinson, president of Color Of Change and one of the leaders behind the #StopHateForProfit boycott targeting Facebook is quoted. “I don’t want to sound naïve, but until recently I was willing to believe that they were committed to making real progress. But then the hate speech and the toxicity keeps multiplying, and at a certain point you go, Oh, maybe, despite what they say, getting rid of this stuff just isn’t a priority for them.”

With Days Left, Black Voters Face Orchestrated Efforts to Discourage Voting

This year we’re up against a new tactic to suppress the Black vote: social media memes aimed at convincing young people their vote can’t stop racism or anti-Black violence. Voter depression narratives can be difficult to dislodge but Color Of Change is fighting back. Vice President Arisha Hatch says, “While voters prone to not turn out might not see the importance of electing a president and the impact on their lives, we are having a conversation with them about the daily decisions that prosecutors make that are causing harm in Black communities. And when we engage in that conversation their mentality begins to shift.” She is also having closed-door meetings with Facebook, Google and Twitter, to discuss what they need to do to ensure that their platforms aren’t being used to disenfranchise Black voters.

Social Media Pounds Non-White Female Candidates, Researchers Find

A British think tank reports hate groups in the US have been using Facebook and Twitter to spread false and abusive information about vice presidential hopeful Kamala Harris and other minority candidates. The research is part of a larger story of how Facebook continues to undermine democracy and civil rights. COC Vice President Arisha Hatch says everyday racist and sexist groups use Facebook to spread lies about women of color running for office. According to the study, Representatives Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were targeted the most on Facebook.

“This Does Feel Different”: As Support for Black Lives Matter Drops Off, Will Corporate America Stay the Course?

After police murdered George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement got unprecedented support, and companies were all about racial justice—there was more risk in remaining silent. But what happens as public support wavers? Arisha Hatch, Color Of Change’s vice president says she’s seen a “sea change” in how companies are racial justice issues, that they’ve got a new sense of obligation to move beyond rhetoric to real action. And it’s too late to turn back now.

Proud Boys Website, Online Store Dropped by Web Host

The Proud Boys grew instantly famous when Trump was asked to denounce the white supremacist group and instead gave them a shout out on live TV. After we leapt into action, the group lost the host for their website and online store. “After a heads up from Color of Change, we notified one of our customers—a website hoster—who took action,” a Google Cloud spokesperson said. This is part of our ongoing work stop big tech from funding and enabling hate groups. Rashad Robinson is quoted, “Big Tech companies have the power and resources to take meaningful action, but instead turn to last-minute, knee-jerk reactions that often fail to prevent further violent harm or even death. When you allow hate groups to recruit, organize, and mobilize on your platform, it’s no longer a question whether your company cares about Black people—YOU DON’T.”
