Kenosha Shooting: Petition Calls For Firing Of Police Officers Who Shot Jacob Blake

BET covers our #JusticeForJake campaign after the announcement from the Wisconsin Department of Justice that the officers involved in the shooting had been placed on administrative leave, not fired or charged. The facts are clear. Jake Blake broke up a fight. He walked away and headed to his car. As he entered his car, an officer grabbed his shirt to hold him in place and shot him 7 times in the back in front of his children.

Viral Pro-Trump Tweets Came from Fake African American Spam Accounts, Twitter Says

Twitter is cracking down fake accounts about Black people abandoning the Democratic Party, the latest propaganda to try to influence November’s elections. One post got 11,000 retweets by claiming they were a lifelong Democrat pushed to vote Republican by Black Lives Matter. Color Of Change’s Brandi Collins-Dexter said simulating Black people’s identity is a common tactic to delegitimize movements. “The point is to provide ammunition against Black people for policymakers so they can point to things that are being said, allegedly from a Black person’s account, to reinforce the idea that Black Lives Matter is a terrorist threat and put them on equal footing as white nationalists.”

The Bail System Hurts Black Families. Let’s Fix It.

Color Of Change’s ongoing work to end money bail is featured in this article as COC President Rashad Robinson shares stories of how, growing up, he would watch his family scrape together bail for an uncle. He is quoted, “From our research and advocacy, we found that big insurance companies were—and still are to this day—reaping profits off the bail industry. As we started digging more, the story of Kalief Browder made things more transparent.” If people are too poor to pay for their freedom, they can end up behind bars for months.

Rashad Robinson on How Everyone Wins When Black People Do

The Advocate interviews Color Of Change’s president about going head-to-head with Facebook to stop hate speech. Facebook has such a behemoth of an institution with 2.6B users that its misuse helped carve a path for Donald Trump. “It’s about holding powerful institutions accountable and forcing them to do things that they don’t want to do,” Robinson says. “What we’ve been doing at Facebook over the last several years is trying to build the energy and focus so that when we have the political power in Washington we can create new rules of the road for technology. How Facebook operates the platform day in and day out is weaponized against our communities.”

Abrupt Change to Census Deadline Could Result in an Undercount of Latino and Black Communities

Trump’s decision to end the Census a month early will almost certainly result in a dramatic undercount of Black and Latino communities, reducing federal funding and political representation for them. Many say it’s a blatant attempt to suppress the political power of communities of color, especially in areas where coronavirus put a halt to Census outreach. Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson is quoted, “At this point, we’re seeing an undercount of Black communities everywhere. Deep undercounts in the South. As COVID continues to rip through those communities, it is a very challenging thing to see communities that absolutely need resources that could be left out.”

Contact Tracing, The Commissioner’s Resignation, The Next Federal Relief Deal

Rashad Robinson is interviewed on National Public Radio on economic relief for workers during the pandemic and why lawmakers have been so slow to act. “The president has been a master at blaming other people for problems placing the burden or the problem on other people besides himself. Right now, he has no one else to blame for the economic insecurity. $600 a week to individuals when corporations have been getting huge breaks throughout this whole process… At the end of the day, still means that communities are really being kept in limbo. We do not know how much longer they’re actually going to extend it if they do.”

Prince Harry Says It Is ‘Down To Every Single Person’ to Act Against Racial Injustice

Recently the Duke of Sussex sat down with Color for Change President Rashad Robinson to discuss “systemic racism, compassion, hate online and using privilege for change.” Doing a livestream interview from his home in Los Angeles, Harry said, in the great uprising for racial justice, it is not “down to the Black community” but on everyone’s shoulder to take action to undo a legacy of racism in the UK and US. He says, “Charity is crucial in so many areas but it can’t fix the problem. The problems are already too big. it’s basically like bringing a bucket of water to a forest fire.” See video clips from the discuss between Prince Harry and Rashad Robinson in the original article.

Prince Harry Reveals It Will Take ‘Every Single Person On The Planet’ To Defeat Racism

Prince Harry recently held a virtual discussion with Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson on how to be a true ally in the Black Lives Matter movement, how to combat systemic racism, and how to eliminate online hate. Harry repeatedly echoed Robinson’s sentiments about racial justice. “Inequality is not unfortunate like a car accident, it has been manufactured.” Harry said, “We have to go to the root of the problem, to the source of the problem, and actually fix it there. It’s going to take every single one of us.” While crediting the younger generation for embracing the core values of activism, and continuously demanding change, he added: “[Now is the time] to act rather than just say.”

Facebook Gets Bad Grades on Report from Civil Rights Groups Behind Ad Boycott

The groups behind #StopHateForProfit say even after the ad boycott, Facebook has failed to take the kind of action needed to stop the spread of hate speech on its platform. Color Of Change’s Rashad Robinson is quoted, “We put out an assessment to clarify what civil rights groups have been demanding for several years versus what Facebook has done. Despite a sweeping statement from corporate leaders that Facebook must do better to protect its Black users, the company has failed to address our demands.” For example, Facebook did not follow Color Of Change’s recommendations on how to shut down hate speech, yet told advertisers it leads the industry and its artificial intelligence is getting better and faster all the time. It also failed to add a civil rights executive to its leadership team.

Activists Working in John Lewis’ Shadow Warn About Voter Suppression Ahead of November Vote

USA Today reports that voter suppression has increased since 2013, and longer wait times to vote, especially in Black neighborhoods, are a sign that things are getting worse. Color Of Change is using its platform to keep voters updated on registration guidelines and counteract false information online–one strategy to make sure everyone can vote come November. Rashad Robinson says Lewis’ legacy hangs in the balance. “You have to be optimistic to do social justice work, so we’re staying focused on making sure there’s a path toward victory in the fall.”

Facebook Has More to Learn From the Ad Boycott

Read this Q&A with Rashad Robinson on Color Of Change’s five-year history of pressing Facebook to deal with its anti-Black problem — from the days when Black Lives Matter activists were being targeted by users. Wired shares Robinson’s perspective on why civil rights groups cannot be left to police Facebook by themselves. So far, advertisers have pulled more than $7B from Facebook, responding to Color Of Change and the StopHateForProfit coalition’s calls that Zuckerberg knowingly promotes algorithms and policies that foment racism and help hate groups get their message far and wide.

Google Rejects Ad Depicting Police Violence Aimed at Persuading Black Voters

Tech giants are refusing to run a political ad by Priorities USA Action and Color Of Change that calls America a “police state” under Trump. The 30-second ad features a montage of police officers beating, tear-gassing, tasing and running over people protesting racial injustice and includes clips from a June speech from Trump. Hulu and Google have said they object to the “violent imagery” and “disturbing content” regardless of the political value and aims to motivate young and non-white voters distressed with the president’s response to the murder of George Floyd. Decisions to allow or censor content in Silicon Valley are coming under heightened scrutiny as the election nears.
