Breonna Taylor & Why Black Women Are Tired of Being Left Out of Our Own Fight

This article explains that although Black women are often victims of racial violence and leading groups like Black Lives Matter, they are rarely upheld as symbols of the movement for racial justice. The murder of Breonna Taylor may change that. Arisha Hatch, Color Of Change’s vice president says that the media often doesn’t take the deaths of Black women seriously. “It sometimes feels like when Black women are victims, we don’t get the same amount of attention. It can signal a hierarchy in terms of who matters.” She has noticed in her 8 years at Color of Change a trend in headlines that often render Black and trans women who are killed invisible.

It’s Not Just Your Feed. Political Content Has Taken Over Instagram.

Instagram has long been the social media platform where people go to escape. But now the Black Lives Matter movement pushed the platform into racial politics and it’s increasingly where white Gen Z’ers are getting an education in solidarity and how to be an ally. Color Of Change’s Sr. Campaign Director Brandi Collins-Dexter says, “Instagram has always been Blacker, more Latinx, younger — groups that are on the front lines right now in a number of ways… For us, the personal is political, and it’s hard to untangle those two.”

Recording Academy Partners With Color Of Change To Advance Diversity In Music

In the weeks since George Floyd was killed, nearly every US industry has come under pressure to face their shortcomings when it comes to racial equality. In music, the Recording Academy just announced it will team up with Color Of Change to launch a set of initiatives to open the industry. Valeisha Butterfield Jones from the Academy said, “They’ve done great work in the TV and film industries, and we saw opportunity for us to do similar work to drive change and amplify the voices of Black people and creators in music through a partnership.”

Police Surveilled George Floyd Protests with Help from Twitter-Affiliated Startup

Dataminr helped law enforcement monitor the protests that swept the country after the killing of George Floyd, tipping police off to social media posts with the latest whereabouts and actions of demonstrators. COC Sr. Campaign Director Brandi Collins-Dexter says, “We know that law enforcement agencies spend a breathtaking amount of money to aggressively track, target, and surveil Black communities. Twitter can’t have it both ways, courting Black activists and marketing themselves as the preeminent tool for organizing against injustice, while turning a blind eye to companies contracting with them for surveillance.”

In Reversal, Facebook To Label Politicians’ Harmful Posts As Ad Boycott Grows

As more big brands pledged to stop advertising on Facebook — costing the company $7B so far — Zuckerberg reversed his stance and agreed to put a warning label on posts that break its hate speech and harmful content rules. Previously Facebook refused to remove, punish, or call out content so long as it was considered newsworthy. But it appears #StopHateforProfit, organized by Color Of Change, the NAACP, and Anti-Defamation League is having an impact. The question remains whether Zuckerberg will take the kind of action needed to stop white nationalist and hate groups from proliferating.

Coronavirus Inside Prisons Doesn’t Just Affect Inmates. It Affects Communities of Color.

This article explains how COVID-19 will further devastate communities of color if officials don’t let more people out of prisons and jails. Color Of Change helped launch #ClemencyWorks, circulating petitions urging governors to grant clemency to the most vulnerable people behind bars. More than 70 organizations nationwide have signed on, calling on “DAs, mayors, sheriffs and judges, locally elected people who have the ability to drastically decarcerate” to do the right thing according to Scott Roberts, COC’s Sr. Director of Criminal Justice Campaigns.

Facebook Just Lost One of the Biggest Advertisers in the World for the Rest of 2020

First Unilever, one of Facebook’s top advertisers, joined the #StopHateForProfit boycott, then Coca-Cola said it would suspend its advertising. Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson is quoted, “This brings us a huge step forward in holding Facebook accountable for enabling hateful, denigrating and discriminatory content against Black people. Facebook leaders should understand the gravity of this movement for civil rights and take urgent steps to remedy its harms, including implementing a permanent civil rights infrastructure. Facebook cannot afford to look away anymore.”

Influencers Use Breonna Taylor Memes to Demand Arrest of Louisville Police

As officers responsible in the killings of George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks have now been arrested and charged, justice remains elusive for Breonna Taylor. Cases of Black women killed by police are historically overlooked and neglected, Scott Roberts, Color Of Change’s Sr. Director of Criminal Justice Campaigns says. “It can drift away from our memory and next thing we know the folks who need to be held accountable feel like the pressure is lessened and they don’t have to act. However, we have to keep this on our minds and on our hearts.”

400 Advertisers Hit Pause On Facebook, Threatening $70 Billion Juggernaut

When #StopHateforProfit launched, its organizers had not yet persuaded a single advertiser to boycott Facebook. Two weeks later, more than 400 companies, from Coca-Cola to Adidas and Lego, have pulled their ad money in a growing protest over how Facebook handles harmful content, used to target Black activists and interfere in US elections. Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson, one of the boycott’s organizers, said this was a long time coming. “Facebook has given [advertisers] no other option because of their failure, time and time again, to address the very real and the very visible problems on their platform.”

Facebook Boycott: View the List of Companies Pulling Ads

A growing list of companies have pulled billions of dollars in ads from Facebook in protest of their failure to stop the spread of hate on its platform. A civil rights coalition, which includes the Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP, and Color Of Change launched #StopHateforProfit calling on major corporations to pause their advertising on Facebook, until the company addresses its problems. According to Ben & Jerry’s, Facebook has allowed content designed to “suppress voters, foment and fan the flames of racism and violence, and undermine our democracy.”

Facebook Unfriended by World’s Biggest Brands as Zuckerberg’s Fixes Fall Flat

Earlier this week Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg held a town hall to announce new measures to crack down on hate speech and misinformation on its platform. But the ad boycott of 130+ companies continues to grow. Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson is quoted, “What we’ve seen in today’s address from Mark Zuckerberg is a failure to wrestle with the harms FB has caused on our democracy & civil rights. If this is the response he’s giving to major advertisers withdrawing millions of dollars from the company, we can’t trust his leadership.”

CVS, Dunkin’, Lego: The Brands Pulling Ads From Facebook Over Hate Speech

An effort to pressure Facebook to crack down on hate speech and misinformation has prompted dozens of advertisers to say they’ll stop spending on the platform. Facebook is facing a growing boycott by advertisers unhappy with its handling of misinformation and hate speech, and its laissez-faire attitude toward posts from President Trump. The growing list of boycotters includes Best Buy, Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Target, CVS, and Hershey’s.
