Color Of Change Applauds the Historic Nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the United States Supreme Court

The Largest Online Racial Justice Organization Calls for Senate Democrats to Swiftly Confirm the First Black Woman to be Nominated to the Highest Court in the Land

NATIONWIDE — Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson released the following statement in response to President Biden’s landmark nomination of United States Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court:

“President Biden’s official nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson represents a historic and long-awaited commitment to racial justice and equity from the federal government. For years, we at Color Of Change have called for the prioritization of civil rights and heightened representation at the federal level and have repeatedly leveraged our collective political power to make sure our voices are heard. We applaud the administration’s commitment to its campaign promise of nominating the first Black woman to the highest court in the land.

With ample amounts of experience and legal expertise, Judge Jackson has earned this nomination. As the first public defender to be considered for the Supreme Court, Judge Jackson has exemplified her steadfast commitment towards equal justice under the law. Throughout her illustrious career, Judge Jackson helped overturn federal convictions, safeguard collective bargaining rights for federal employees, and imposed transparency into the Trump administration. She understands how systematic issues target Black and marginalized communities across healthcare, education, voting rights and more. We’re confident she’ll bring her unique perspective to future Court rulings, ensuring Black communities are represented.

However, despite her flawless record, we know that Senate Republicans will inevitably delay Judge Jackson’s nomination and question her qualifications. They’ve historically shown that they will do whatever it takes to bolster the discriminatory and conservative status quo  – whether it be pushing through the nominations of Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett or hijacking the nomination process for Merrick Garland. We cannot allow for this to happen yet again.

We demand that Senate Democrats take charge and to ensure a swift and effortless confirmation process for Judge Jackson. As the first Black woman to possibly sit on the Supreme Court, Judge Jackson will help millions of Black Americans dismantle unjust systems of oppression and discrimination and will work to safeguard communities against the blatant attacks on our civil rights nationwide.”
