COLOR OF CHANGE CALLS FOR RESIGNATIONS OF LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS FOLLOWING RACIST REMARKS

Sakira Cook, co-interim vice president of Color Of Change, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization, issued the following statement in response to the release of racist audio recordings from a Los Angeles County caucus meeting

“The racist and homophobic remarks we heard from Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez and City Council Members Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo were abhorrent and an example of the racist rhetoric that if gone unchecked, perpetuates harm and violence against Black people through dangerous policymaking.”

Color Of Change and the Los Angeles Community Action Network coalition demand the resignations of Martinez, Cedillo and León to resign from the Los Angeles City Council and force tangible commitments from the LA City government that makes sure this never happens again. All four individuals involved in this deeply upsetting conversation are unfit to lead and with people power, we can ensure these resignations and the implementation of policies that hold racist government actors accountable. The people of Los Angeles deserve much better.”
