COLOR OF CHANGE REACTS TO DONALD TRUMP’S EXECUTIVE ORDER ELIMINATING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, OVERSTEPPING HIS POWER

NATIONAL – Moments ago, Donald Trump signed an executive order eliminating the Department of Education, a decision that he has no power to make.

The order, which comes after Trump slashed the Education Department’s workforce in half last week, directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to facilitate the closure of the agency, restoring education oversight to individual states.

Portia Allen-Kyle, Interim Executive Director of Color Of Change, issued the following statement:

“The President has no authority to eliminate the Department of Education. Unfortunately, Congress refuses to assert its authority as an equal branch of government, passively allowing an unconstitutional action that will interrupt access to quality education for millions of children nationwide. This failure to act by Congress will hit Black students, working-class families, children with disabilities, and other vulnerable communities the hardest, and that’s entirely the point of the President’s neo-segregationist agenda. Color of Change will continue to mobilize our members to contact and pressure local and state boards of education to keep up the fight for the freedom to learn. Without our collective advocacy, the White House will continue to advance a neo-segregationist agenda that fails students and families nationwide, undermining opportunity for generations to come. We can’t and won’t let that happen.”
