Color Of Change Successfully Pushes for Stronger Content Moderation Policies on Twitter Following Meeting with Elon Musk
The nation’s largest online racial justice organization will continue to hold Musk and the social media giant accountable for Twitter’s impact on Black communities and election integrity
NATIONWIDE – Today, following Elon Musk’s announcement of Twitter’s updated content moderation policy, Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson released the following statement:
“Yesterday, along with other leaders of various civil society groups, I met with Elon Musk, who recently bought and took over all decision-making control of Twitter. As a result of this meeting, Elon Musk promised to preserve several existing protections against the amplification of hate and lies, particularly amid the upcoming midterm elections.
Our initial meeting with Musk is just the beginning, and there are many more steps he must take, including: implementing a robust and transparent content moderation system, restoring full access to internal content moderation tools to the Trust & Safety team, conducting a full third-party evaluation of Twitter products for discrimination and civil rights violations, and more.
Misinformation, disinformation, hateful rhetoric, online harassment and other results of an almost entirely unregulated tech sector are not just abstract principles or debates — they are matters of life and death, safety and harm, freedom and oppression. We will continue to hold Musk accountable to the evidence of Twitter’s negative impact on Black people and our freedoms, even as his many cheerleaders try to deny them.”
