Color Of Change: ‘The Legislation Introduced by Sen. Sanders Is A Step In the Right Direction To End Money Bail’

Color Of Change, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization, issued the following statement in response to Senator Bernie Sanders introducing the No Money Bail Act to the Senate floor.

Scott Roberts, Senior Campaign Director at Color Of Change:

“Color Of Change is proud to support the No Money Bail Act introduced today by Senator Sander and commend the Senator for his commitment to ending money bail. We have supported the No Money Bail Act since it was first introduced by Ted Lieu in 2015. We’re excited to see that his new Senate version builds on the initial call to end money bail by also collecting more data and making it clear that any effort to end money bail must result in lower rates of pre-trial detention. We believe this bill will address the financial and psychological harm money bail has on Black people, our families and communities. Black people face 35% higher bail than white people for the same charges. We call on Members of Congress to take action. We  must stop being a nation that locks up our citizens based on their inability to pay.

For too long, the corporations that reap massive profits from this unjust destruction of our communities have been allowed to operate unchecked. When taxpayers foot the bill for needlessly locking up poor people before trial, the government is essentially subsidizing a racist, unnecessary, and outright dangerous industry.”
