ColorOfChange Executive Director Calls on Governor Nixon to Use Emergency Powers to Appoint a Special Prosecutor

Rashad Robinson comments on Missouri State of Emergency

“By declaring a state of emergency, Gov. Nixon now has all the authority and power necessary to appoint a special prosecutor to replace McCulloch and push for the arrest of officer Darren Wilson. Doing so would go along way to restore peace and calm in Missouri and securing justice for Mike Brown. Any day now, a grand jury will decide whether or not to indict Officer Darren Wilson and the latest indications are that he will likely not be charged.”

“With the National Guard on call and police stockpiling military weaponry, the threat of escalated police violence is very real. It is incumbent upon Nixon to prevent the continued violation of Missourian’s civil and human rights, and use his authority to appoint a special prosecutor immediately. A failure to show the necessary leadership will only condone further corruption of Missouri’s justice system and attacks on the public’s 1st amendment free speech right to protest.”
