The following is a statement from ColorOfChange.org Executive Director Rashad Robinson:
“We are glad to hear that McDonald’s has ended its relationship with ALEC, if it is indeed true. When we began conversations with the company in December, we were clear that ColorOfChange members had concerns about McDonald’s connection to voter suppression efforts. We last heard from a company representative in February of this year, at which time she assured us that McDonald’s was still a member of ALEC.
“Now, a company spokesperson is contradicting the letter that we received. We call on McDonald’s to clarify its position and make it known when exactly it ended its membership in ALEC. Hundreds of ColorOfChange members and people associated with our allied groups are calling the company today to express their concerns, and we’d like to update them with factual information so that they know how to proceed.”
Today, ColorOfChange members and partner organizations began calling on McDonald’s, State Farm and Johnson & Johnson to cut ties with ALEC, and calls to AT&T began earlier this week. These actions follow last week’s announcements that Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Kraft Foods and Intuit have also ended their membership in ALEC.
