In Florida, Color Of Change Demands Justice for Reform-minded Prosecutor Monique Worrell

Following Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ suspension of elected Florida State Attorney Monique Worrell, Color Of Change released the following statement from Michael Collins, Senior Director of State and Local Government Affairs:

“In another attempt to subvert justice and democracy, Governor DeSantis has removed a Black female prosecutor who not only was chosen by her constituency, but who has been a voice of progress and reform in Orlando and across the state. This abuse of power from the statehouse is yet another sign that we need to prevent people like DeSantis and his far-right allies from controlling the justice system and democracy. State Attorney Worrell is being punished for taking the side of justice and delivering on the issues for which she was elected. This suspension by DeSantis is an overreach of his authority and should be challenged in a higher court, we can not continue to let the Governor run the justice system.”

“Color Of Change will continue to defend reform-minded prosecutors, in our pursuit of a criminal legal system that prioritizes equitable justice for all people. As a voice for criminal justice reform and a leader in the movement for racial justice, Color Of Change condemns the suspension of State Attorney Monique Worrell, and will continue to hold elected officials accountable for their abuse of power and their overreach of authority.”
