Statement from Rashad Robinson, President of Color Of Change, on Death of Harry Belafonte

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Mr. Harry Belafonte, one of the most prominent racial justice and cultural leaders to grace this earth. As we’ve worked to position Color Of Change as a premier racial justice organization, we stand proudly on the shoulders of the legend that is Mr. Belafonte. He was one of the earliest racial justice leaders to understand and use the power of culture to change our society. It is because of Mr. Belafonte’s sacrifices and leadership, that we are able to continue this work and for that, we are eternally grateful. We’ve also been fortunate enough to watch his legacy continue as we’ve worked with his daughter Gina Belafonte, who has kept her father’s legacy alive with activism of her own. As we offer our sincerest condolences to the Belafonte family, we encourage his supporters to lean in on an important lesson that he’s taught us throughout his career — Black joy. Mr. Belafonte taught us that the greatest form of rebellion is giving ourselves permission to feel joy and that is the greatest gift of all.”
