New York, NY — With Valentines day just a day away, ColorOfChange.org sent a letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio urging his administration to complete the investigation into racial profiling of Black shoppers at Barneys New York that was started by the Bloomberg administration. Commending the new mayor for swiftly reforming the NYPD’s discriminatory Stop and Frisk policing tactic, the civil rights group says the mayor can now demonstrate that his administration is prepared to defend New Yorkers against racial profiling wherever it may occur.

Rashad Robinson, Executive Director, issued the following statement:

“We commend the mayor for taking concrete steps to reform the NYPD’s use of discriminatory Stop and Frisk policing, but the work to end racial profiling in the city continues. All New Yorkers deserve to live in a city where they can walk the streets or shop and make legitimate purchases without being unlawfully stopped, questioned and detained by police or security guards.”

“By continuing the investigation into racial profiling at Barneys New York where the Bloomberg administration left off, Mayor de Blasio can send a strong message that his administration is prepared to defend New Yorkers against racial profiling wherever it may occur. The public has a right to know the racial breakdown of the suspects arrested, how many were actually charged with a crime, and what role the luxury department store Barneys played in these arrests.”

More than 58,000 ColorOfChange members have signed onto the campaign urging Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the NYPD to conduct a full investigation into these arrests.
