NEW YORK –Color Of Change, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization, issued the following statement in response to President Trump ending protected status for Haitians, which will impact the nearly 60,000 Haitians currently in the U.S. through the program.

“President Trump’s cruel decision to eliminate temporary protected status (TPS) for Haitians is part of a larger scheme to push immigrants out of our country. By taking actions like eliminating TPS for Haitians and ending DACA, President Trump is tearing families apart and attacking immigrants who have contributed immensely to our country. TPS recipients, DACA recipients and other immigrants who have come under attack by this administration are our co-workers, classmates, friends and partners—they are cherished members of our communities. All of them should be protected and have the right to remain in the U.S.

“Since Congress first created the Temporary Protected Status program (TPS) in 1990, it has protected a large number of Black immigrants who have fled political unrest and environmental disaster, including recipients from Haiti, Sudan, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. We cannot allow the Trump administration to undermine this lifesaving program and continue its broader attacks on immigrants. It is critical for Congress to pass legislation that keeps the TPS program intact and creates a pathway to citizenship for all current TPS recipients. And it is critical for all of us to stand up against the Trump administration’s ongoing attacks on immigrant communities.”
