Color Of Change, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization, issued the following statement in response to The College Board’s announcement that it would keep history from before 1450 in their AP World History curriculum.

Rashad Robinson, President at Color Of Change:

“Today’s announcement is the result of more than 30,000 Color Of Change members, educators, students and academics who raised their voices to demand accountability from The College Board. The rich pre-colonial history of Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East deserves to be taught in addition to European history. We commend The College Board for listening to the concerns of our members, engaging us in important dialogues, and making the right decision.

This is an important victory that demonstrates the power of Color Of Change members to speak truth to power and challenge the institutions who attempt to erase the histories of Black and Brown peoples. It deeply matters how we write about history and tell stories within academic settings. Millions of students take AP courses each year and the reach of the College Board’s AP program has the power to essentially set curriculum standards for high schools across the country.

It is imperative for students of color to see themselves represented in the education they receive. We look forward to continuing to work with The College Board to ensure that they are providing students with a multifaceted, accurate, and diverse historical perspective.
