Wade in a bombshell decision — and some states have banned abortion completely — reproductive justice advocates are making the link between abortion access, civil rights and democracy. They say that there is some overlap between state laws making it harder to […]

BLAVITY: Now It’s Up To Prosecutors To Ensure Pregnancy Outcomes Aren’t Criminalized

Color Of Change’s criminal justice team writes about what we can do in this moment to protect women and access to abortion. Now is the time to fight for reproductive freedom at the state and local levels. The easiest way to do this: ensure DAs don’t prosecute pregnancy outcomes. DAs have the power to sanction arrests and create prison pipelines for abortions, stillbirths, miscarriages and accessing types of care. They also have the power to sidestep criminalization and enforce policies that put women’s well-being first. Since they are elected officials, they report to voters like us who keep them in office. We’ve heard horror stories of women in Texas sent to jail for having abortions and women in Mississippi denied abortions for ectopic pregnancies that would save their lives. THE ROOT OP-ED: Biden Needs to Grant Clemency to the Over 4,000 People on Home Confinement

Color Of Change’s Sr Director of Criminal Justice Scott Roberts writes about Gwen Levi, a 76-year-old grandmother and cancer survivor who was cruelly re-incarcerated after missing a phone call from case manager while taking a computer class. Color Of Change members helped secure Gwen’s freedom. Roberts explains how they are 4,000 others like her on home confinement during COVID-19, and President Biden has the power to grant clemency and free them for good. “Though Levi was home, the conditions of confinement were still stringent — she was required to get an approval of an itinerary to go anywhere, wear an ankle monitor and constant check in before leaving and returning… Home confinement is simply an extension of the prison system, one that tethers people to ankle bracelets and constant surveillance.”

This comes after years of calls for reparations and justice for the survivors, and renewed campaigns and calls for justice driven by Color Of Change.
